A changed America: Marking 10 years since 9/11

Ten years later, Americans come together today where the World Trade Center soared, where the Pentagon stands as a fortress once breached, where United Airlines Flight 93 knifed into the earth.

They will gather to pray in cathedrals in our greatest cities and to lay roses before fire stations in our smallest towns, to remember in countless ways the anniversary of the most devastating terrorist attacks since the nation’s founding, and in the process mark the milestone as history itself.

As in earlier observances, bells will toll again to mourn the loss of those killed in the attacks. Americans will lay eyes on new memorials in lower Manhattan, rural Pennsylvania and elsewhere, concrete symbols of the resolve to remember and rebuild.

But much of the weight of this year’s ceremonies lies in what will largely go unspoken — the anniversary’s role in prompting Americans to consider how the attacks changed them and the larger world and the continuing struggle to understand 9/11’s place in the lore of the nation.

Warriors for a brotherhood

GalaTView Staff

Photos & Video by: Alfonso De Elias

The youngest son (Hardy) of an alcoholic former boxer (Nolte) returns home, where he’s trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament — a path that puts the fighter on a collision corner with his older brother (Edgerton).  A violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father. But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton) said in an interview for GalaTView: “This movie was intense because this sport has not seen realistically like in this film. And two brothers are involve in a collision course who have to deal with their past in the present day. Brendan as a high school teacher has to fight due all his debts, his salary is no enough so he has to risk his marriage and his happiness. It’s a painful situation. I had to train with professional MMA trainers where I also learned self-defense in some movements. It was really hard in some training but after that I enjoyed my role.”

Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy):”His life was really hard after he joined the Marine Corps and suffered his mother’ s death and has been drifting and falling into trouble since he returned from Iraq. Tommy had his father as a trainer but he didn’t respect him in that side (as a good father). So he is in this tournament and the viewers have the idea that he will lose with his brother due in the previous fights had won with no troubles. However, he is spiritually bankrupt. He needs to die at the hands of his brother to be reborn. Honestly, he has a hard battle with his own demons but physically in some scenes I was exhausted because we practiced (with different trainers) for many hours. This was a boxing movie but also it was full of drama, with many feelings involved in each character. I think my job was real and authentic.”

Tess Conlon (Jennifer Morrison):”As a wife, I wouldn’t like to have a similar situation. Tess had to support him in order to her husband could focus on the following fights. Her love for her family and husband was very important. At the end, she was cheering up to Brendan in each battle. Therefore, the intimacy and truthfulness of the whole story makes it really hit home.”

You will be deeply touched by Shaolin

By GalaTView staff

As feuding warlords fight to expand their power, the noble monks of the Shaolin Temple clean up the mess left behind, tending to the injured while trying their best to protect the poor and weak. General Hou (Andy Lau) has caused much of this mess with his violent and ruthless tactics that rarely discriminate between soldiers and civilians. When Hou is betrayed by fellow general Cao Man (Nicholas Tse), he is forced into hiding, and takes refuge with the monks (including Jackie Chan) at their hidden mountain temple. As the days pass, he finds himself more and more at ease as he learns the ways of peace, and begins to release his hatred through Martial Zen. But Cao is not far behind, and war soon reaches the temple, where the monks are ready to fight back with their unstoppable Shaolin Kung Fu.

It was inspired by The Shaolin Temple and most of the story has martial arts during the age of the warlords. Contrary to the popular belief Shaolin temple doesn’t train people with martial arts so that they could go out  and fight each other. Music and Photography are amazing and all the audiences will enjoy this inspiring movie full of wisdom and spirituality.
